How Much of Whitney Cummings is in Max?
Dennings acknowledges that Whitney Cummings, the executive producer of 2 Broke Girls, has influenced her character Max, especially in the early days. “To me, Whitney is Max, and Michael Patrick King is Caroline,” she says. As the show progressed, Dennings found herself incorporating more of her own personality into Max, especially by season two. “The writers know me well enough now to add a bit of my true self into Max.”
Max’s Nerdy Side
Max has started to adopt some of Kat Dennings’ personal traits, especially her nerdiness. When asked about her own “nerd” habits, Dennings laughs, “I don’t go out. I stay home, knit, and watch movies. That’s basically my whole life.” While being nerdy is now considered cool, she jokes that her version of nerdiness involves staying in and enjoying her quiet time.
Improvisation on 2 Broke Girls
Contrary to what viewers might think, there’s no room for improvisation on 2 Broke Girls. Dennings explains that every word is scripted, and even the slightest mistake means retakes. “If it sounds like improv, it’s not,” she shares. Despite the rigid script, Dennings and her co-star Beth Behrs run lines together constantly to ensure everything flows smoothly.
Juggling Thor and 2 Broke Girls
Dennings had a challenging time balancing her role as Darcy in Thor: The Dark World with her TV commitments. Despite the hectic schedule, she was excited to return to the Marvel universe. “When I found out I was in the second Thor, I was so excited. I said, ‘I’ll do anything to make it work.’” Initially, she was expected to fly between the two projects five times, but it was eventually reduced to three.
The Appeal of 2 Broke Girls
Dennings wasn’t originally looking to do television, but the involvement of Whitney Cummings and Michael Patrick King convinced her to sign on for 2 Broke Girls. “It was the best decision I’ve ever made,” she says, recalling how the team won her over during a dinner. The mix of strong personalities and creative energy made the project irresistible.
A Love for Comic Books
As a fan of comic books, Dennings was thrilled to be part of the Thor universe. “My brother collected comic books when we were kids, so it’s very exciting. I’m a big Marvel fan, so it’s pretty crazy to be involved.”
The Rise of Binge-Watching
When asked about the trend of binge-watching TV shows, Dennings admits she enjoys the convenience of watching a whole season at once. “It’s a great way to enjoy shows without having to wait week to week,” she says. With 2 Broke Girls available on DVD, it’s easier than ever for fans to enjoy the show and catch exclusive outtakes and features.
Through her passion for her character and work, Kat Dennings has made Max a beloved figure in the world of television. Whether she’s juggling Hollywood blockbusters or indulging in her love of comic books, Dennings continues to bring authenticity and humor to everything she does.
