Gal Gadot’s Spy Movie Falls Short Due to Its “Overambitious” Approach

Despite high expectations, Netflix’s action spy film Heart of Stone, starring Gal Gadot, failed to make a significant impact with audiences. The film follows international intelligence officer Rachel Stone, portrayed by Gadot, who is tasked with protecting a mysterious object known as the “heart” while maintaining global peace.

Heart of Stone aimed to kick off a new franchise with grand ambitions, but it ultimately struggled due to its overly complex and crowded plot. The film’s attempt to integrate numerous elements—covert intelligence operations, global conflicts, and AI influence—resulted in a disjointed narrative. According to USA Today, the film would have benefited from being part of a series, as its dense plot hindered effective world-building and character development, leaving Rachel Stone’s background and motivations underexplored.

While the film’s shortcomings are evident, Gal Gadot’s performance stands out. She brings her signature charisma and strength to the role, infusing Rachel Stone with a unique blend of allure and detachment. Despite Gadot’s compelling portrayal, her presence alone couldn’t fully elevate Heart of Stone beyond its overambitious execution.

According to USA Today, Heart of Stone could have been more understandable if it were part of an action movie series. However, this is an original film, and this overstuffed plot hindered the world-building and character development. This is also the reason why the main character Rachel seems to be kind but the audience cannot understand her psychology or life story.

Basically, Heart of Stone is not too bad, this is mainly thanks to Gal Gadot. The actress completely owns the character, spreading the power of Wonder Woman to the spy character. The combination of charm and coldness created a completely new Rachel Stone that the audience can love. Still, Gal Gadot’s charm alone can’t make Heart of Stone any more enjoyable.

The movie revolves around international intelligence officer Rachel Stone (played by Gal Gadot) when she embarks on a dangerous mission to protect the mysterious MacGuffin known as the “heart”. Rachel is tasked with keeping the peace so that this object is safe and does not fall into enemy hands.

Heart of Stone is an ambitious franchise start like many action movies of the same genre. However, in the end, the film overdid it by trying to cram as many “good” things as possible into two hours. The inclusion of all the covert intelligence operations, global issues, and the influence of AI made the story rambling, unable to focus on telling a consistent story of the female lead.
