Kat Dennings and Andrew W.K. Celebrate Intimate DIY Wedding at Home
Actor Kat Dennings and singer-songwriter Andrew W.K. share a love story they describe as “mystical.” The couple had admired each other’s work for years before meeting in person, and when they finally did, sparks flew. “It quickly became obvious that we were made for each other,” recalls Dennings, famous for her roles in 2 Broke Girls and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Three years ago, Andrew visited Kat, and by the end of the trip, they knew they couldn’t be apart. “We actually proposed to each other in the kitchen at the exact same moment,” she shares.
On November 27, they exchanged vows at their Los Angeles home. While they considered eloping or hosting a large wedding, they ultimately decided a cozy home ceremony felt right. “The kitchen engagement moment kept calling back to us,” says Dennings. “Plus, all our stuff was there, so we wouldn’t have to pack anything.”
A DIY Wedding Planned with Love
The couple took charge of planning their special day. “I wanted our wedding to feel completely different from an industry event,” Dennings explains. She fully embraced the DIY approach, personally creating the florals, aisle decor, and ceremony arch, a project that took three days. “I wanted to be hands-on with everything, to make it feel like we had built this moment together from scratch.”
Dennings also took an unconventional approach to her wedding dress. After some frustrating showroom experiences, she decided to skip the traditional process. “I realized, as a very pale person, that I didn’t like myself in white,” she admits. After trying gowns in various cuts and colors, she found her dream dress: a vintage deep ivory gown by Alexander McQueen. She completed the look with Jimmy Choo shoes, which she described as “like a mermaid’s dream.”
On the wedding day, Dennings stuck to the DIY theme, doing her own hair and makeup using her favorite beauty products: Il Makiage foundation, Hermès blush in Rose Ombre, Beauty Pie lip pencil in Rummy Pink, Flower Beauty eyeliner, and Maybelline waterproof mascara. She also picked a special fragrance for the day, something she recommends for other brides. “It’s a great way to cement the memory of the experience with a sensory element you can always revisit.”
Andrew W.K. complemented Dennings’ style with a bespoke Brioni suit in dark aubergine, featuring violet piping. His custom shirt and tie were designed by Anto Shirtmakers in Beverly Hills.
An Emotional Ceremony Filled with Love
The wedding ceremony was an intimate, emotional event. “The love surrounding us was palpable,” Dennings says. While she initially considered postponing the wedding after her father’s passing a month and a half earlier, she realized it was even more important to hold on to the joy. Her mother walked her down the aisle, and Dennings felt overwhelmed with gratitude for Andrew and their loved ones. “The ceremony itself was kind of a blur, but in the best way,” she recalls. “We just looked into each other’s eyes and were so excited to finally be husband and wife.”
After the ceremony, about 15 guests, including close friends Macaulay Culkin and Brenda Song, gathered inside to celebrate. The small gathering felt perfect, according to Dennings. “Everyone was happy and enjoying themselves, and there wasn’t a dull moment,” she shares. Naturally, the bride kicked off her shoes soon after.
By creating a day that was uniquely theirs, Kat Dennings and Andrew W.K. turned their wedding into a meaningful and unforgettable experience.
